win 98 defrag failing

Hi,Can anyone advise me on a problem with win 98,s defragmentation utility?Even after a reformat and a clean installation the defragmentation utility just hangs with no sign of any percentage being defragmented.There is nothing on startup interfering or any screensavers enabled.Any suggestions.

if you have anyfirewall or anti-virus program running disable them while you defrag or run scan disk, also go to your control panel and then to the system icon, go to the advanced tab, then file system, change the primary role of the computer from desktop computer to network server, it will spped things up a bit plus improve the stability of it. will have to apply and reboot the machine before the change is applied.

You may want to try starting in SAFE mode. This keeps all background programs from running (like virus detection).

You may also want to try and shut down some programs that automatically start up when pc boots up. At Start button, select Run and then type msconfig and hit enter or ok. Go to startup tab and unclick anything you recognize as not needed. Some office programs or other games, seldom used programs can be unchecked.

Thanks Stonedpenguin I have got a web page to download the ME defragmenter but feel I have finally brought the 98 version back to life once more.I run xp actually the 98 problem was a friend of mine and I feel safe to say it is now sorted.regards,pc fanatic.
