how to i get my sound back?
Can someone tell me how to get my sound back, in the system devices, i have 4 listings for a cm18330 audio adapter, with exclamation points through them, i try to follow the update driver setup, but it will only go so far, and then it says i cannot reinstall it. So is there someone out there that can help me. I am running windows 98. And more importantly i am just learning this stuff, so if you can help, the easier the explanations , the better! Oh i just checked , it is a question mark, with an exclamation point, which goes through all of them.

if the drivers on that page do not help list the model number and name of your pc, also what happened prior to the loss of sound.

Tried that one last night, i followed instructions but it did not work, it said something about a zip file, which i could not find in the device manager. This computer i bought, was made from scratch apparently, i do not know the brand or model number.

sounds like the file is just zipped, download the evaluation copy of winzip and extract the file. after the file is unzipped, may either have a installer, or you will have to go to device manager and direct the driver install to the folder you extracted to.

zip files are compressed removing data that a operating system allready knows, like shorthand for computers, make the file smaller, and easier to send with multiple attatchments. download winzip from the link above, it is not free, but comes with a evaluation usage. this program , once downloaded and installed can extract files people have zipped with most any known zip program.
now if you installed the program, and you dont have the driver file, redownload it from the link above, save to your desktop, now you should be able to double click it like any other icon and it will open the winzip program with the file data listed in the window. before you double click it, right click one time on a open area of your desktop. select new, then another menu will appear, select new folder. now you have a new folder on your desktop. double click the driver file, select the extract button (top of the window on the toolbar) now a list has appeared asking to what location, you should see new folder listed, double left click on that link, and click extract, now you files should be in the folder you created. if the driver is a installer, just double click the setup icon, if just a bunch of files that look like notepads and white pages with a little band and dots in it, right click the my computer icon, then select properties from the menu, now click the device manager tab, right click on the sound card select properties, then click the driver tab, click update driver. put a check in install from a specific location. click next, now on this screen, put a check in include this location in the search. click the brows button next to it, click on desktop, then you should see new folder listed, double left click on it and click next/ok on through till it is installed, the computer may ask for the windows 98 cd so have it handy.

i understand that winzip is not free, the program comes with a evaluation period, should be able to use it to do what you need, i dont much recommend the free zip programs anymore because they change so often it is hard to keep up, i used to like freezip, but the new versions have been adware copies, meaning they are banner ad/spyware infested. it is almost impossible to keep up with all the programs out there, and i dont want to suggest something that is, spyware/adware/bloatware/scumware or something else undesirable. usually 15 people post links to these kinds of programs. i use winzip or winrar only.

RE-SOUND PROBLEM-WINZIP
Hi,Winzip is a utility which allows files to be sent in a ZIPPED version which means they are compressed to make them smaller and easier to handle. This is common practise in computing it also allows for faster downloading. In order to download a ZIPPED or compressed file you need a program to do this and known criminal is absolutely correct winzip is by far the best utility to carry out this operation. In order to obtain a copy of winzip you need to go to the website (which I believe you have done already)you will be offered an evaluation copy which is supposed to last for 30 days.In my own experience I have used so called evaluation copies (trial copies for you to try out and evaluate) for an indefinitr period. When you download this program and open it you will see a box which will offer you the option of registering winzip (purchasing it )or continue to use the the free evaluation version, just click to say you will continue with the free version and you will then be able to use the program. It will remind you each time you use it that you have been doing so for however many days it is,I personally have seen this reminder continue for over 100 days and was still allowed to continue with the free version after clicking to use this option.

RE-USING WINZIP.
Okay you have winzip, the next stage is to download the file known criminal gave you the link to(that is the website address you did not fully understand)by clicking on this link(so called because it links you directly to the web page)you will go directly to the page. When you locate the file you require click download and if it is a zipped file winzip will automatically download it for you.Prior to reaching this stage it is sensible to create a folder within "my documents" called zip-files and when you download any zip-files using winzip select this folder to download to.This is so you will know where to look for these files. After you have downloaded the file by double clicking the winzip program icon (shortcut to the program) the file will automatically open in winzip. To "extract" the file use the extract option in the toolbar at the top of the winzip window that will appear when you open the filee.Be sure to select where you tell it WHERE to extract to as you will need to find it to run the installation program.I suggest you create another folder in "my documents" and call it xp software or any name you will recognize.Once you have successfully extracted the file you then close down winzip and open your new folder and select the installation program and install your new file.I hope this makes it clearer for you if you need any more help let me know, regards pc fanatic.

win zip
Well i followed the instructions, and of course, it did not work. on my desktop now, i have a new folder, a win zip set up, and a a new zip folder. Apparently i did something wrong, i did not see anything remotely close to the words EXTRACT, so i guess that is where my problem may lay. I give up with this, i just will go without sound i guess, thanx for all your help, sorry to waste your time.

re-sound problem
When you say you have a winzip setup does that mean you have not yet installed winzip? If you have not then you will not see extract as it is a part of the winzip interface. The idea is to install winzip first, locate the zipped file you are after at the relevant site, click download and winzip will take over and download the zip file to its own program. You then open winzip navigate to the folder you have downloaded the new file to,click to open the new file which will look like a winzip icon( but will still be named) then at the top of the toolbar in winzip ( the toolbar is at the top and runs across) you will see the option EXTRACT among other optionsWhen you click extract you will need to select WHERE you wish to extract to which is where your new folder comes into play, this is the destination folder that you select for the extraction.Dont give up so easily-once you do this you will not forget how and you will wonder why you found it difficult.regards pcfanatic,

winzip
Well i tried like i said, but i got 2 types of winzip files on my desktop, which you did not mention that i would, so which one should i open up then? Then i am supposed to go back to that website that had the drivers? and open the file? or save it? see that is the stuff that confuses me. I just wish there was a step by step procedure you could give me, so i could try it again. I really appreciate your insight, but your instructions seemed to all go together, that is where i am having a problem, figuring out which step and the order of them. Is it possible to just send me an email at tp1260@yahoo.com, and do a step by step procedure, that is probably the only way i am ever gonna be able to do this.Like i said before i uninstalled everything from those winzip things, but i would be more than willing to try it again.
