Scan Disk Problem

Hi – I’m trying to do some maintenance on old PC. I keep receiving this message while trying to run The Scan Disk:
Scan Disk has restarted 10x because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running programs may enable scan disk to finish sooner.

Can you tell me what this is and what I need to do to fix?

Thanks – Denise

Compaq Presario
Windows 98 SE (build 4.10.2222)
450 megahertz AMD K6-2 w/3DNow

Normally caused by ...

Anti Virus or Screensaver / Power Saving Settings.

Best thing to do is try running in Safe Mode.

When you want to run scandisk, before to do this, press Ctrl+Alt+Del. The Task Manager comes up. Click explorer, then End Task button. When it prompts to shutdown click Cancel. An error will comes up, that prompts "End task?". Click Yes. Now try to run scandisk.

Another way if needed .

DOS's Scandisk can sometimes do it better .
Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMI pool message comes on ) or Press Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computer , choose Command prompt only ( NOT Safe mode Command prompt ), then at the C: prompt , type Scandisk /Surface & press Enter .

When finished , type win & press Enter .
