receiving mails with attached virus files

I daily receive 4 or 5 mails with an attached file containing a virus. The sender is "Microsoft" and the subject is "use this patch immediatly" or whatever. The sender address is always different. NAV detects each time the viruses but I am tired now to receive each day such a garbage. Do anyone get the same problem and know how to fix it ?

There is really nothing you can do, except live with it. I get hundreds of those emails a day. Be thankful you have updated antivirus signatures that are protecting you.

If you're using Outlook, you can set up a Rule to delete them when they arrive.

Yup! But you're still stuck downloading them. Heck, I tried setting Outlook to delete them directly off the server, but my Norton AV just downloaded them anyway.

Well, if you're really serious about it, you could get a firewall (hardware) and strip all attachments as they come in. Other than that -- it's one of those "live with it" things until all the authors of viruses get enough fiber in their diet that they are too busy to keep writing this garbage.

What I do before starting up in the morning is I log onto the mail server using web access, then delete them all directly from the server. That at least saves me the time of downloading them in the morning. Of course, they come in all day, but it's not as bad as 50 or 100 spams and virus e-mails all at once when I first fire Outlook up.

Can't argue with that. I have a firewall that renames all attachments to use a useless extension so they can't execute.

However, I'm still stuck downloading them. My host has a Beta WebMail program. I will start using that to clean it up before downloading. Thanks.

You might try this web mail interface -- it works beautifully:

I used to access Earthlink mail directly on the server. I'm not sure whether it will work on your host.
