my computer & trash icons freeze system

after an unsuccessful defrag, trying to open my computer icon or trash icon makes start menu button stick down and freezes everything, everything else works fine until i try to open those two.
of course i was using a friends computer - help please - i always wreck everything i touch

this problem needs more explanation, how many programs/running processes are running, how much ram, processor, disk space free, icons by the clock. i doubt you had anything to do with this, unless you added or removed a program/hardware or made some other changes.
