Unhappy Win98se doesn't recognize new hdd

I have just purchased a new hard drive and installed it as a slave on the primary IDE Buss. The BIOS correctly Id's it and if I go into System Info it is listed in the Components, but no drive letter is assigned. I tried the DOS Fdisk, but can't find it without a drive letter assigned. I must be missing a step, but I can't figure out what it might be. Does any good hearted person out there have the missing link/s? Thanks!

what is the jumper on the master set as? some have a master(of a single) and a master( with a slave ) setting, should be listed on the drive, if not look it up on the mfg web site. if the drive was new , it came with a cable, use that one and not the one in your machine.

hard drive

If you got a new hard drive, you probably got a cd or diskette to help you install that drive. If you didn't , go to the mfg. site and download the program, which will run in windows and this will help you install this drive. It will also allow you to format it.
What I would suggest , if the old drive is smaller and somewhat older, is to make the new drive your primary drive. This mfg program will transfer your old drive to the new drive. Then you can disconnect the old drive, try running the new drive alone to make sure it runs ok, and then connect the old drive. Fomat the old one and set it as the 2 drive. This will give you a possibly faster drive in the primary position, not to speak of capacity. When you go to transfer the drive be prepared to wait many hours for this to take place, because its going to copy for a while(don't loose patience, you can take a nap(hours).
You must have the manufacturers site. Meaning an IBM disk may look at a Maxor drive, but an IBM disk will only work on an IBM drive. I have done this many times and you will be amazed how beautiful it works GOOD LUCK

RE: qfisheye's suggestion

Thank you for the suggestion, it turned out to be just what I needed. I did go to Western Digital's web site, and downloaded their "Data Lifeguard" install/diagnosis program and it did the trick!

Thanks;
