Windows Me running VERY SLOW!

Hi all,
My friend has a 1000 MHz Intel celeron with a geforce 4 mx 440 and he has told me for the past month the whole thing has been running slow. He can't remember if he installed anything on it that may have caused it. It runs very slow in games and installing things. Though what I have noticed is that I ran an mpeg video file of a cd and it ran that fine but on a game like age of mythology with the start movie it was all slow and jumpy. They have all the latest drivers for the video card and computer. Could some one please tell what is making it go so slow and how to fix it, also they have 192mb of ram so I don't think it’s a memory problem but I’m not sure.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try a bit of general housekeeping and then see how the system runs ...

Check your system for malicious code using an up to date Anti Virus program.

Check your system for spyware and adware using a checker such as Spybot.

Remove unwanted files and applications by running Disk Cleanup.

Check your Hard Disk for errors using Check Disk.

Defrag your Hard Drive.

Download the latest patches for the applications / games.

Download and install the latest drivers for your system video and sound cards.

Maybe it's time for a clean reinstall, if its been a while since Windows was last installed. Sometimes WIndows slowing down is a sign oof this, but it could easily be anything else.

Well they have Norton 2004 and that is bloody useless because on there other computer (they have 2) it has five viruses and norton just says "Deletion Failed" and so that computer is infected but the other one isn't. And they must of done that maintenence process more than 5 times already. They tried reinstalling but that didn't work so i did say that they should try wiping it and starting fresh but they said thats what they did but i don't think they formatted it so i might have to do that for them.

I agree with "loose chippings" and try to clean it up. Do the sensible common fixes first. Then If you still have problems try to attack in a different way. Go to "www.iolo.com/ct" offer code is "ctmax'. Go through this program--you won't be disappointed. its a 30 day free. Good luck
