When you hear the sound, hit Ctr-Alt-Delete and look for any programs that are running that shouldn't be.

Is it a siren or more like a chirp? Are you by chance running Weatherburg? I know that has an annoying sound for weather alerts.

If you have onboard Trend ChipAway Virus this can trigger the siren noise.

Smile from the computer?

This happened to a friend of mine too, and he eventually realized the sound was not actually coming from the computer. He was next to a fire station and an office window was open. Do you have a police, fire, or some other emergency response center within earshot? If so, don't feel bad...we have all been fooled at one time or another.

Since the original post was made 3 years ago, I doubt he still has the problem. Plus, since he can stop the noise by turning his sound down I doubt its coming from a fire station.
