Windows Me: DVD Problems

I recently had a virus in my system and i used AVG virus scan to heal the virus, however, it removed certain system files that may have been corrupted by the virus. I cannot play DVDs, however, CDs play fine. It also won't allow me to re-install my drives, application, and system restore CDs which came with the PC.

Error message when attempting to access CD/DVD drive:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Could someone please help?

Note that when your pc gets a virus, it is quite possible that the virus has been backed up with the rest of the files during an automatic restore point. Thus, if a restore point is ever used, then the virus will be restored at the same time.
disable the system restore function which should delete all backup files.
Then do another virus check, preferably from a write protected floppy or bootable anti-virus cd.
If all appears well, do an in place reinstall, but turn the computer off fully for 60 seconds before attempting this.
A restart will not kill a virus in memory.
