XP to 98 Networking HELP!!
HELP!!!!
2 computers.. 1 win98 and one running XP
the only possible way to network them i found is to have them both using the TCP/IP protocol and assiging similar ip addresses such as 24.14.40.2 and 24.14.40.3.... This DOES work, only one way, but then my internet connection is out. It is a cable connection, and it seems that i have to tell it to automatically obtain the ip address, and then i can't fileshare anymore because of ip mismatch. Please help.

The answer to The tools question 'If you have 10 computer will you post same thing 10 times' . Please don't double post. 10 computer All of a question lacking a question mark i think..'
Is yes I would have because it would pertain to those specific thread groups. I didn't know that there would be somebody out there getting upset about it.

Hello,
This full is 1 forum. Windows 95/98/ME and Windows XP are sections. A person visiting one section will also visit the other. It will be annoying seeing the same posts in both the sections. This is not like Groups.
Anyway, lets get back to the topic

I could have sworn that there was more than one topic here.
I must be mistaken and i apologize. Next time I'll keep in mind that if it pertains to more than one topic, I'll find a forum with a narrow range rather than one that has both topics listed...
Oh wait i already did that... and darnit if i didn't ask for help, not to be ridiculed. Maybe we should learn how to share a message board holding more than one topic. And not complain if we're jumping topics and see the same thing twice. (After all if you DO in fact see the same thing twice, that is two posts with the same title, you don't have to open both of them).

Seems to me like you are spamming this thread. Why not just say this all in one message?
Back to your question, yes, use a TCP/IP protocol. Or you can try the Microsoft Knowledgebase for Networking questions and problems.

I currently use the setup you have. You have the XP machine as the internet gateway right. Set this up using the wizard in "my network places" if it doesn't work first time, reboot and try again.
Finish of by creating the network setup floppy and run that on the win98 machine. If you've tried allready, disregard. But it was the easiest way i found.
Funnily enough, i thought uPNP was supposed to take care of this sort of thing when active on both machines.

To further expound upon the last reply:
Have the Windows XP box hooked up to your cable modem.
Open NETWORK CONNECTIONS from the CONTROL PANEL.
On the Left, click on "Setup a Home or Small Office Network"
The first choice is what you want, that this machine connects to the internet and other machines on the network get the internet from this machine.
Follow the directions to pick the ethernet card (whether PCI/ISA or USB) that is hooked to Cable modem Service as the one supplying the internet.
Then pick the other ethernet card as the one for the network.
Make the network setup disk if you want, although Windows 98 won't need it, but hey, let's be safe.
Reboot if it tells you. Once XP is booted, go to the Windows 98 machine
From your desktop, right-click on the NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD icon and left-click on properties.
Double Click on TCP/IP that is pointing to (--->) your ethernet card.
On the IP Address tab, select "Obtain an IP address automatically"
Click OK, Click OK, reboot.
When 98 reboots it should use DHCP to pull an IP address from Windows XP
Your XP machine IP will be 192.168.0.1 and your 98 machine IP will be 192.168.0.x where x is another number from 0 to 255.
Your internet and filesharing should be setup.
Hope this helps.

It's also worth noting that the PC must must Windows 98SE (Internet Connection Sharing doesn't work on 98 and 95)

Thats if the pc running the internet is the 98 one. Yes, then it has to be Win 98 SE
I recommend the XP one being the one to run the internet.
If the XP one is running the internet, then the other machine can be any 98SE, 98, 95, NT, 2000, XP and if your really up to it - Win 3.11

Hi,
I'm also trying to build a network with XP and Win98. My problem is the cable always says unplugged even though it's connected (cross over cable) to the 2 machines. Do i have to boot them up in sequence it's getting very frustrating.
Any help very much appreciated.
Thankyou
