Question Floppy disk(s) fail (40)

Hi everyone,
I just went out and bought a new floppy drive cuz I thought that was the problem why my pc isn't working. But I looked up on the internet about this floppy disk fail (40) and it says something wrong with the cable or connection. Well the cable is brand new and the drive is brand new and I've taken the cable off and made sure it's pushed right in there but it STILL keeps coming up with this message.
Anyone else have any ideas what might be wrong? Connection on the board I checked as well...I'm just at a loss here!
Thanks in advance
Kim

I bought six computer last month and two of the had the same problem,, I had notice the two that had the problem were different brand as the four good ones so I asked to have them changed to the older panasonic drives, you might have a bum floppy in your hand (even though it is new)

cheers

I got the problem with the floppy figured out. Just needed a different cable but now we are trying to get into Safe Mode to try and get around this network password but it won't go and I've tried pressing F5 and F8 nothing works.
I found out the CPU is Pentium-S (its an old computer lol) and its running Windows 95. I want to try and get into DOS but I put in a startup disk and it didn't do nothing but it was a 98 one, does it need to be a 95 startup?
Thanx!!!!

Network password for Window 9x platform is a joke,,, you can simply type something else in the username area and press ok,, then you are in(could pressESC nut the network setting won't work),, then go to dos box and delelet any file with extesion *.PWL ,, Also in the SYSTEM.INI you should remove the old password entry too.

Ok well, thanks for the advice...tried that and didn't work. This is what is has in the box 'user name' 'password' and 'domain'. So I tried putting in a name with the domain name it already has in it, didn't work. Deleted the domain name and just tried a user name, said 'must specify a domain name'.
So I'm at a loss again...it's really starting to piss me off lol. Shouldn't the disk boot the computer into dos as soon as it starts? My pc does that when I put in a startup disk....
Thanks

Bunch of stupid questions...

Ok I finally got into DOS on the pc but now I'm wondering where do I find the .pwl file (probably in Windows dir right?) also when you type 'dir' for something like Windows and it just keeps scrolling up how do you 'pause' it to look at the files?
Thanks for putting up with me LOL

Ok, like I said in my previous message, I'm into DOS now and I found this on the web

'CD\WINDOWS and press <Enter>.
To view the files type DIR *.pwl and press <Enter>.'

but it doesn't come up with ANY .pwl files so obviously there is no DAMN password haha just a username I probably have to enter. The domain name is already still on there, says GHS from a high school here so I'm sure that's right....Guess I just have to figure out a user name.

Let ya know how it goes....

Kimmetje2004, I hope you have it figured out by now,, if not,, here it goes:
on the network prompt, press ESC to get into the desktop, then right click on Network Neighborhood, go to Property/ on configuration Tab, select Client for Microsoft Network and the click on property button,, on the Login Validation section, remove the check mark from the [Log on to Windows NT domain] , click OK, reboot the system, on the reboot you can pick any user name and don't put anything for the password and click OK,, that will get you in.

cheers

p.s: on my original post, I didn't know that machine was setup for domain login.

Hey snowmonkey,
Thanx for the info. I tried hitting ESC and it says 'the network cannot validate your user name'. When Windows first loads up without me doing anything it has in the user name space 'a' and under domain it has 'ghs'. If I delete the 'a' it says 'your not logged in to a local-area network'
I'm totally running out of ideas here, like how f-ing hard can it be to get into a computer. And also, I was wondering if I take the CMOS off would that delete everything even the OS?

Thanx a million!!!
