Multimedia Audio error Dell Dimensions 4600

Hi guys,

I've been through the various forums but I can't seem to find anyone who has my PC with the same error, although there seem to be plenty of multimedia errors in general.

I have a Dell Dimensions 4600 PC. I formatted, removing XP and installing Windows 2000. In the process, I'm guessing I lost my audio drivers as now I have no sound. My device manager has a yellow question mark and an exclaimation mark under Other Devices, next to Multimedia audio controller and PCI Device.

A dxdiag brings up the below (and more but I left out the rest)

Sound Capture Devices

As you can see, it doesn't pick up any sound card. The various jacks are immediately below my keyboard/mouse outlets so I'm guessing I have an internal card. Which one, I don't know...I've tried downloading soundblaster, AGI 180 etc. drivers but they don't work either.

I'm not sure what motherboard I have. If anyone can help me figure it out, I can go to the relevant manufacturers website and download the chipset? I'm all out of ideas.

Oh and urm...I kinda went into Sound, Video and game controllers in my Device Manager and deleted all my audio codecs, except it wouldn't delete Microsoft PCM converter. I figured if I deleted everything Audio related, it would fix itsel...ahem.

Please help. I really REALLY do not want to upgrade to XP. I've only just loaded on all my other applications.

Thanks in advance.

Sam

Download Everest: http://www.lavalys.com/products/down...?ps=CE&lang=en
Run it, go down the list on the left to "summary", copy and paste the contents of the rightside display here.

Ok guys, I gota hold my hands up to this one.

Having reformatted hard drive from XP to 2k (due to a nasty virus) and then discovering the audio didn't work on 2k, re-formatting again, back to XP (as I'd found the XP CD after booting up Win 2k) and realising the audio STILL didn't work...I came close to chuckin the thing outa the window. Only for my kid bro to walk in at around 1am when I had finished loading XP: "have you plugged the speakers in". I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. My face just dropped. I checked the back and lo and behold, what do I find? The power to the speakers was plugged in but the jack wasn't in the back fo the PC. I could have screamed!

Sorry guys, put this down to over zealous comp geek wanabe, thiking herself far too clever to have BOTHERED TO CHECK IF THE JACK WAS IN!

sigh.

MD.

The simplest things often get overlooked by the technical possibilities. :}
