Windows 2000 shutdown delay

I have a older 440BX-based system (PIII-800) system that has been rock solid for the past several years. I can't remember exactly when this started (possibly since the last Windows Update for a couple of Critical patches within the past week or so) but I've noticed that when I shutdown this box, the shutdown window is displayed indicating to wait while Windows saves system information. It sits here for about a minute before completing the shutdown (the box then powers down). This box use to shutdown very quickly (within 5-10 seconds).

I'm running Win2K SP3, the mobo is an older AT-style (Tyan S1830S). I haven't installed any new apps lately and I don't think I have any issues with APM or ACPI since it does power down completely after the shutdown. I have all of the MS patches/updates/service packs...does anyone have any idea?

What Firewall ?
What antiVirus?
Any backup programs like Un-Delete or Go Back ?
Usually it is one of those slowing you down.
Run Trojan hunter or trojan remover too.
Sometimes a sub seven works the registry on shutdown.

W2k slow shutdown...

I have recently experienced the same problem. Found information that attributes the slow down to a Windows Update file. I don't remember exactly where I came across this information, but check your system for windows update 'Q329170'. This seems to be the culprit. Please check the M$ knowledge base for any information before deleting this update. (not all systems will respond the same) If you begin to uninstall this update (Add/Remove programs) you will receive a warning message and a list of programs 'that may not work properly' if you remove this program... I removed this update a week or so ago, and have not experienced any problems and my computer is shutting down like it used to. The choice is yours. If removing this update does happen to cause you problems, re-install the update. Also make sure to back up any critical files. Hope this was the info you needed... post back if it corrects the problem.

Thumbs up Windows 2K Shutdown delay due to Q329170

Thanks Bman for the info in Q329170 causing inordinate shutdown delay..

I uninstalled the patch and problem fixed..

Interestingly enough, I have two identical machines using same Intel motherboards and only one of them had the shutdown delay problem.. The other machine works fine with the patch installed...

Shutdown delays seem to be associated more so with networked machines due to the additional time it takes to quiese and close the network connections. Maybe that's what makes one machine have the problem and the other not have it.. The one with the problem is using the on motherboard Intel Pro 10/100 Ethernet adapter and the other machine is using a wireless adaper... perhaps the different network drivers in use could be a factor?

Unhappy

i had a similar problem that involved one of the hotfixes pre-sp3. the microsoft knowledge base descibed it as a dns issue, and one of the hotfixes could be deleted and then in turn speed up the shut down process. unfortuneatly i can't remember which article Good Luck!

I did research this and it is a specific patch that caused this problem. I had to uninstall it from our presedents computeras she was complaining about how the time to shut down had increased from about 5 sec to about 55 sec. Ill find out which one it was next time im at work and post it here.
