Win2000 Networking Issue. Is it the latest bug or a virus???
Hi,
This error has been reported by another poster in this board but got no reply.
Basically, We run win 2000 on all our machines(8) in the office. Each machine has been given its own ip manually and is not assigned automatically. Now, when you try to access another machine on the network eg "MACHINE-A" you get the error message
"\\MACHINE-A is not accessible. The network name cannot be found"
Thinking the problem might be with the networking cables, i ping MACHINE-A plus all the other machines and no packets of data are lost indicating the machine are on the network!
Next i click on the networking icon on the desktop and choose "Computers Near Me" ( All the machines are on the same workgroup "Africa") . I get the error
"Africa is not accessible. The server is not configured for transactions"
Interestingly enough, earlier I had placed a shortcut on my desktop to a folder in MACHINE-A when everything was okey and when i click on it the folder opens and you can see the files in MACHINE-A .
In this instance, the weirdest thing is that you can't open the files in that folder from their current location ( in MACHINE-A ) but can copy them to your computer and open them!!!!
Could this be a bug with win2000 or is it a virus. I've installed the latest Service Pack (4) from the microsoft website.
I've also run all the known antiviruses (McAffe, Norton, AVG) but no virus has been found. i've even updated all the virus definations but still no results.
Any help on this from you people. This is really frustrating!!!!
Regards
