opens with two copies of IE 6.0

Due to a problem with IE 6.0, I downloaded and reinstalled the browser, and it installed. Now when I click on IE to bring up the browser it brings up two of the browsers, which eats up my RAM. Both of them seem to work OK and I can close one of them, but it doesn't release all of the RAM.

Any suggestions as to how to keep "two" browsers from opening at the same time. I am stumped at the moment.

if you still have the installer handy, go to add/remove programs, then add/remove windows components and remove ie, reboot and see if you still have one, if so remove it again. when you get it removed, reinstall with the one you downloaded.
