Windows 2000 help

Hi, I was hoping someone on here could help me out. I bought a used Gateway computer running windows 2000 professional, for my son, from a friend of mine. Everything was working fine until I tried to add some hardware. I keep getting the box saying "you are not authorized, contact the administrator. Well I called my friend up and asked him what the user name and password was and he can't remember. Is there a way to get around this so I can install some hardware..Thanks Drew
