Unhappy Drive letter to USB ext hard drive

Connected external USB 2.0 hard drive, but I can't see the drive in "my computer". How can I assign a drive letter to this newly installed drive? thanks for any help.

Windows will assign a drive letter as soon as it recognizes the drive. Question is, why is it not seeing the drive? Did you try "add new hardware" with the drive connected?

Or, did Windows already detect the drive, but just not assign the drive letter?

It may see the drive, but you don't see the letter especially if you're in Icons view. Do View Refresh, then View Details. If you see the letter of the drive, then when you change back to Icons view, do a right click -- arrange icons by... Name
There should also be an icon in the system tray (lower right) that titles "Safely remove hardware" If you don't have this, then it never saw your usb hd. If you do see this and you open this icon, you should see your USB drive on the list of removeable hardware. Windows 2000 does not always automatically detect usb hardware (XP does this) . A separate driver may be required.
