Windows Media Players locking me up

Greetings all.

I stupidly upgraded to Media Player 7.1 a few days ago and it locks up my computer when I try to play a file. I dumped it and went for the 9.0 version, and this time I can hear the sound, but it locks up the computer as well. This means the mouse stops moving..and I cannot ctrl-alt-delete to get to the task manager to turn it off.

What sort of conflict is happening here that it locks up my computer?

Also, if anyone has one of the older versions of Media Player..before 7.1, I would love to reinstall it.

how much RAM is in your computer and what speed is the CPU? Have you applied SP 4 and other updates?
