modem or virus problem

I have a situation when I log on the the internet my connection is fine but the longer I am on the slower my connection is, I can't even update my antivirus software. Is this something working in the background? If I put the mouse arrow over the internet conn. Icon it shows twice the amount of items sent as recieved, this isn't right. Whats my problem?

sounds like spyware/trojan to me, have you:

1/. run spybot
2/. run adaware se
3/. run Trendmicro Housecall

Try those and see what they find.

Download and install Microsoft's AntiSpyware program and make sure you have an updated anti-virus program. While you're at it, might as well run disk cleanup and disk defragmenter.
