cable/DSl router in my network

[size=3]Well I will try to make myself as clear as possible.
I own a network everywhere (linksys) Cable/DSL 4 port Router Model NR041 that I recently hook up on my small network. This is when I started having issues.
I have in my small network a Dell Poweredge server running win server 2003, a Dell PIV Dimension running win XP Pro, a Dell PIV Dimension running XP Home and from time to time I hook up my laptop which is a Dell Inspiron running XP Pro.
Before having this router I had a dial up connection running in only one PC and everything was running smooth. I could back up all the three computers every night on my server. I could access the server from any computer and vice versa in the network.
Since I hooked up the router to share my new DSL internet connection I had problem file sharing in my internal network but all of the computers can access internet through the router. I can see sometime the other computers if I open “view workgroup computer” but cannot access them and sometime one is missing. I have tried to use the manual to go over and over again setting up the router correctly and it’s kind of frustrating for me.
Is anybody know a website where I can find step by step instructions or help me understand what is going on so that I can file sharing in my internal network using this router.
Do I need to open some ports on the router without making my network vulnerable to hackers in the internet?
Thank you for your help. My email address rogergoudiaby@yahoo.com

NO!

My simple explenation

It sounds like your network was using ICS
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) enables a Windows computer to share its Internet connection with computers on local area networks. It's been around since Windows 98 SE, and with the launch of Windows XP, it's only gotten better.

But now, with the router installation you want your netork configured differently.

Your network has a LAN (local side -View workgroup computer) and a WAN for INET access. The DSL Router connects to the Internet, unlike ICS, where the PC directly connects.

Also with XP your machines may have been configred with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall, that prevents unwanted attacts. However, its not to be used with a router becuase the router setups its own firewall.

Therefore, each machine in the LAN must be configured for the LAN access, not ISC and not ICF. Sometimes friggin around with the Network setup in XP causes problems. I suggest you look at this website Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

They have some stright froward instuctions.

Let us know how you make out.
