Slow to log on to Windows 2000 Advanced Server

I have a small network of 12 pc's some with Windows Xp and some with windows 2000. All their DNS is set up to point to the internet router.

I have the following problems:

1) All machines take ages to log on....between 1 minute to 2 minutes

2) When I share a printer, even though the user who is trying to connect to any given printer is logged in with a domain user name and password it still asks me for another one and I have to tick the box saying remember otherwise the host pc denies access next time.

3) Even though I am logged in as the administrator, when I try to add users to folders etc I get a "no locations can be found" message.

I would like to add that even when I change the Primary DNS server IP to that of the server it changes nothing, I still get the same problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Nick

I don't have any suggestion for issue # 1

#2- Is it a network printer (do it have a NIC) or it is connected to someones computer ? Best solution for network printer is to assign an IP address to it then install it on the domain server (since it is a small network), the install the printer on the domain server and run the share from there...(make sure that you have a Group on your AD called "All employee" (add all the user to the group) and add the group to the printer user list.

#3 I have experience this first have, this happened when there are mix of Windows XP and 2000 on the network (you won't see this if you change you server to 2k3)....Anyways, my work around was a NT 4 solution (believe it or not).....check this site out.

If you want to share something run the "ShareManage" first ....IT WORKS.

Cheers

Hi,

Thank you for your trying to help.

Unfortunatley, none of the suggestions worked. As I mentioned in the question, the printer is shared, therefore defining it as connected to a pc on the network. And the link you asked me to follow just shows me how to bring up an active directory search in Windows XP.

Many thanks anyway

Nick
