Windows 2000 -> Windows 98...

I pretty sure that this cannot be done, but ......... can I go from Windows 2000 to Windows 98 without losing all of my files?

windows 2000 will not let you downgrade (xp will). what you can do is backup any important files and folders (outlook, my docs, my pics, etc.) and do a fresh install. if they were formatted in NTFS it will not matter, but make sure they are not encypted or compressed as FAT volumes do not support it.

what if i installed the xp upgrade, can i still go back to 98 from there? or does it have to be a complete xp installation?

question: why would you WANT to go from 2000 to 98? If it's a matter of compatibility, that makes sense, but XP can run most programs that are 98 compatible, so if an OS change is necessary, you should go up, not down. Of course, if it is a matter of running programs like DOS based games, then 98 would be the way to go, but why bother?

heh, yeah normally there would be absolutely no reason to do this, but it's a relative's work machine and she wasn't supposed to have anything but 98 on there, or at least that's what I'm told.
