slow file opening

We are running a window 2000 pro machine which we use as a file server. (not server addition) and are now running windows XP pro on two of the desktops. When ever we open Word, Excell files although these open for viewing quickly they take upto 20 secs to be open for editing.

I have checked the 2000 pro machine and removed all networking (IPX etc) leaving only TCP-IP and the problem still exists.

The internet connects through a ADSL modem on the 2000 server

When I do a winifconfig on the XP machine it sees a DHCP server with the IP address of the Windows 2000 pro machine although I can find no record for a DHCP server (only client) on the windows 2000 pro machine.

The 2000 pro machine has been set up with a fix IP address but the XP boxes are set to find IP automaticlly. In the IP set up on the server a DNS server has been set with the same IP address as the server,

Well... your ADSL Modem could be your DHCP server (if it is a newer model)...... I'm sorry, but I didn't understand your question ! Do you need to increase the speed of opening file on the server, is that question ??

start your pc in safemode then run defrag.

because i have a p4 512 MB ram but when i open notepad it takes around 3 - 6 second. after defrag just 1 second.
