Question Need HELP??? Configure Setup OS on C:Drive, put the Desktop on D:Drive ???

Is it possible to setup OS by itself on the C:drive and the Desktop and Programs on the D:drive, and E:drive for data?

YES!

yes, it is possible. you can install OS on one partition, then install all of your programs on a different one, and store your data on another.

by "partition" i mean both single drive and more than one drives. if you have one hard drive, you can partition it into primary/logical partitions however way you want it. if you have more than one HDs, you can still partition them, or use them according to your preference, as in your question.

one thing is that, the DESKTOP comes with the OS which you are installing, you cannot have it on a separate partition. if you want to use multiple desktops, i believe there is software which enables you to use virtual desktops.

hope i answered your question.

netsurf is right on. But there is really no benefit to installing programs on another partition. You would still have to reinstall all programs if you reinstalled the OS. But I have heard one report of better performance by putting programs elsewhere. Anyone else on this?

yes, beeboy, i agree with you that there is no benefit installing programs on another partition. you are definitely right that if you reinstall OS, you will still need to reinstall programs since their registries are deleted when you reinstall OS. i only answered what marque asked. i am not sure if installing programs else where would result in better performance. to me, i'd rather let the OS handle where it wants programs be (ie: c:\program files).

to marque: i don't know why you want to install programs on different partition (unless you have a better reason). but when you install a program, it registers into the OS's registry, so even if you reinstall the OS or install an additional one, or delete/install new one, you will still have to reinstall your programs.

just something thought i should mention in case you haven't known it already. but if you do have reason, then i have no comment.

i just juggled my drives around because my master disk is failing, and i decided to try a setup very similar to the one proposed. i am finding no benefit. as a matter of fact it is a pain in the arse. just make a partition for your pictures, music, and things that are hard to replace. then make a small dedicated page file partition, and leave the rest to windows and programs.
