From what I've seen personally... XP is very... conditional. Either it runs like a dream or it's a nightmare. I'm one of the few that have had no real issues with the OS.
I am currently having a partition issue but I'm thinking it's just because I haven't formatted the partition in a couple of years. XP for me has been extremely reliable, and has all the nice visual features. I was never a fan of Win2K and hated ME. Win2003 is alright, but I still prefer an XP Pro machine provided your computer can handle it. If not then yes you'll feel severe system lag.
I don't really do much with my machine.. mostly gaming, artwork, and homework. Some of the newer games I've begun to feel a bit sluggish but I blame it on CPU and MoBo. And not really sure but to me games just look better on XP than it did on 98 and even 2K.

i just bought a new hard drive to replace a bad one on my kids computer, being i use repairs as a upgrade excuse, i bought a new 120 gig wd hd and gave the kids my 80 gig and now i have two 120 drives, i was using the 80 for my os, so when i reinstalled i thought about this post and installed 2k and planning to reinstall xp on the other drive. it has been a couple of years since i used 2k on my own machine. it is XP without the $h[t
it dont have the themes, system restore, cd burning software, and a few other system sucking items i disabled anyway, the one thing i did notice, which i am looking for a patch, cant open two voice chat rooms at the same time, get the service is in use error. miss that, but other than that my system seems twiced as fast and i can use alot of programs xp didnt like, like browsers, i have opera, netscape, mozilafirebird, avant, slimbrowser, copernic (whick is a ie with add ons) and did not have to play with settings for days to get them right. of course i have IE 6. my burning software is running better. photo software, office, everything except games, took a little tweaking, but they are doing ok, will play with them more till they are what i want. if anyone knows of a multi media patch for the sound card please let me know i am looking, but what i have found has not been what i needed. as for reinstalling xp, think i will just hold out with 2k and see about the finnal release of longhorn. as for using linux, i like my game to much to bother with it anymore, dont seem like they plan to support games in the near future.my os choices are not limited, i have redhat 9, lindows, windows,3.1,nt4,98se,ME,2000, server 2k, XP home, and Pro, server 2k3 had a bunch of older stuff like os2, and dos versions, my house burned last year and they went with it.

WIN 2000Pro vs XP Pro.
I'm Admin. on Net. with 120 users + 250 users on remote locations all over globe, we tried to replace WIN 2000 Pro. with XP Pro. What happened? Just one word "DISASTER". All I have to say from my 10 years of experience on this job. The best Microsoft OS ever is WIN 2000 Professional.
WIN 2000Pro. RULES
PS
Microsoft is not King but WIN 2000 Pro. is definitely Prince of all Network OS - s.

W2k Pro Most Definitely
W2k Pro is THE ONLY WAY to go. I have a machine that came with XP Pro...after I ran that for a month...I unloaded it and reinstall W2K Pro and I have been a much happy camper eversince. I think the only reason MS comes out with different OS is MONEY....They are in the Sales business. They have to have new products so they can make more money. If no one buys any more OS or Upgrades, they will not make as much. Most large companies are running W2K Pro so support for this OS is not going away anytime soon. It is a solid OS like a granite will last thru the end of time if you maintain the system as all of us do.

I've used W2000 for quite a while without any major difficulties. When I used XP Pro,there were many problems.2000 is the most stable OS ever put out by MS,and its more secure than XP.

I like W2K cause I can run it on any crappy P233 MHz system w/128 Megs of RAM.
And she'll bang a way like a $5.00 trick in a house of Ill-repute. Oh.

Absolutely w2k pro is the best ms os !
When the management (big mouth, brainless) decided to move to xp the nightmare came true.
We had at least a couple of crash every day, 80 computers x 2 crashes = 160 phone calls, mad angry people screaming.
Of course some of them crashed the system making something wrong but with w2k we had an easy life, 2 max 3 crashed a day.
Long life w2k pro !!!
And now Vista just arrived, the fun has not started yet
You must be already a IT engineer to choose the version you need
Put your w2k cds in the save, you will always need them one day.
Bye

Well, hi guys,
As a recent convert ....from an old Compac using Win98SE 256k RAM - which is closer to the Win98SE-limit, someone else suggest 128...I've had two PC's under Win98SE, both 256K) - anyway this one prints as the other PC's suffered 1) PSU Failure- A non-standard Compac PSU and 2)the other suffered a print problem on the motherboard.
This "new one" is an old Compac (yes!) Deskpro EN which does print now I downloaded the Lexmark driver, although I'm getting confusing messages about registry errors - but I suspec these are from a previous owner surfing the net and picking up all manner of junk.
-Unfortunately this PC has only 128k - but I can upgrade to 256k for a small sum..... before I do that I'm hoping to check it out.
Any suggestions as to what to do and the order it should be done?
- I don't have the original MS disc and strangely I cleared out some rubbish files (as suggested by Clean-up (was it?))....and now I can't start Defrag, although it shows there is nearly 98% of the disc free.....(of 20G)...which makes the OS look rather small, since I also have a copy of OpenOffice under Programs.
That's enough - I wonder if I should search for some clean-up software, clear out junk, fix viruses etc......I really only want to use the pc on the internet and don't yet have ZoneAlarm installed, although perhaps I should and make a copy of the Install Software ready for the day when they pull the plug on Win2000 support.
Any suggestions welcome.
I don't think this PC is up to running XP and Vista would be like taking the RAM out!.....
So, suggestions from those with experience, please . . . .
Bye.

win2k pro still one of the best os around..exc for laptops..good for pro audio apps as well..uses less memory than win xp,,and tweaking the performance makes it fast. its 7 years old but just as good as xp. and stable. i used to run it on my dell laptop a year ago..now using xp,,but still got the original cd for win 2k.

Win2k is simply amazing!!
I am running it on a p2 400MHZ gateway that originally had 98 on it and it runs solid.
However, i recently built a quad-core gaming computer which I have xp pro on right now. If I were to put 2k on it would I run into compatability issues in terms of the new games coming out (crisis, cs: source, etc) if not then I might switch back to 2k on my gaming machine.
Thanks
