Help: Cant join newly installed domain
I am having a problem which I am sure is probably something really dumb on my end...I recently configured a domain at my house...I have a DC, a desktop and a laptop...The DC and desktop are connected to a switch whcih is uplinked to a switch port on my cable/dsl router...on the DC I configured DNS and the router handles DHCP...everything sounds pretty straightforward right...
After hours of headscraching and troubleshooting I was able to get the desktop to join the domain...initially it couldnt' find my DC but I hit the web and tried some fancy (j/k) troublesooting tips such as registering my DNS on the desktop etc...but when I come to the laptop which is connected by way of router, this doesn't work...I attempt to join the domain and get prompted for the admin crudentials, I put that in and am being told the domain cant be found...now here is the exact syntax of the errors because it differs from whether I enter the Netbios name or not
if I enter BROOKLYN.COM as the domain I get = a DC for the domain Brooklyn could not be contacted without being prompted for crudentials
If I enter BROOKLYN I get = Network path not found after entering crudentials
I assume the different errors is because the first name I enter isn't routable and being that I am going throguh a router, it is not even hitting the domain...but why is it failing when I take out the .com?...
I've tried configuring the laptop with a static DNS entry using the IP address of my DNS server and that doesn't help and actually does more damage by not allowing me to access the internet...I've tried reregistering the DNS on the laptop...I am at a lost...any suggestions?
