Smile Removing 1 of 2 OS on Laptop

Hi,

I'm hoping there's a simple solution to my dilemma. I purchased a laptop the other day at a garage sale (planning to use it as a secondary computer for my mom). I was told that the computer was in excellent condition booting to Windows 2000 Pro as the OS and Microsoft Office... this info was correct. What I wasn't told was that the previous owner installed Windows XP Pro to the laptop but didn't have a fresh product key license for either XP or the Office update. The laptop operates just fine but alot of HD space is being wasted. I want to remove the XP.

I've never worked with Windows 2000 before (both of my computers operate on XP). The first thing I looked for was System Restore in an effort to revert the laptop back to an earlier date... no luck. Help! How or can I remove XP from this computer or is it permanently afixed? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is 2000 the primary OS or is XP Pro? If it’s Win2000, Edit the boot.ini file and remove what is there and past this in its place.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Restart the computer, it’ll boot strait to Windows, or to your password prompt. Now right click on My Computer and select Manage. Click Disc management, right click the partition that contains the XP Pro and delete the partition. Right click again and format the partition in NTFS. Now you have that space for storage.
