server 2003 ad group policy problem

Hi. I am currently running windows server 2003 enterprise and I have already set up AD. I want to be able to redirect some folder is my profiles so it doesnt take forever to log on. From what I hear you need to do this through Group Policy Object Editor with Microsoft Management Console Snap-in. Its in User Configuration | Windows Settings | Folder Redirection. How ever when I get to Windows Settings, Folder Redirection does not appear. I have went to Microsoft site and did the regsvr32 fde.dll command to try and register the folder redirection .dll file and it says it was successful but it still doesnt appear in Windows Settings.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

This another way for MS to confuse people......OK..Try this,

Control Panel / Administrative tools / Group Policy Management / Forest / domain.com (what ever your domain is) / Group Policy Objects / Click on Enterprise Server Folder Redirection......this will open up a new group policy panel just like when you type gpedit.msc but this will be for Folder Redirection.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

HI. Thanks for your response.

I went into administrative tools and there was not Group Policies Management.

I tried looking for anything that had to do with enterprise folder redirection and found stuff about Certificate Authentication. Do I need to create a certificate of some sort to enable this setting?

Also I found this command called dcgpofix which from what I read resets the AD group policy to the installation defaults and maybe that would bring back the Folder Redirection since I had many failed attempts of installing AD in the past.

If I were to run that command will it totally reset AD and not know I have a Domain Controller installed?

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Download GPMC from this link and then follow the instruction I have provided before:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

You don't need to install CA in order to have the GPMC option....it comes with 2003 Server (I'm not sure if original release on 2k3 server was any different or not).

If you want me to have a look at you issue on-line......you can download Crossloop from this site:http://www.crossloop.com/ and send me the session key via PM (crossloop is very simple tech support tool).

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Thanks.

I downloaded the Group Policy Management and it finally showed up in Administrative Tools. However, it does not show Enterprise Folder Redirection or anything that says Enterprise after I go past Group Policy Objects in my domain.

I am also having one other minor problem. When I am logged onto my roaming profile from another computer I make changes to my account and then log off. Then when I go to another computer it does recognize the changes such as background change, new icons on the desktop, etc. Instead it goes though the process of creating the account when it has the dialog box in the upper left hand corner where it says its creating all of the preferences for internet explorer and start menu items, etc.

A profiles folder does show up in the shared directory on the server where it is stored.

Thanks

I don't remember the exact procedure for folder redirection on roaming profile (It's been a while)........you would be better off using the server help menu on roaming profile and folder redirection.

If you have your AD configured properly then you should be able to see the Group Policy Objects .....unless your many attempt by executing different dll has messed up your setting.

Is this a test environment or production environment???....if it's a test environment that O would suggest to start again.....but if it's production environment then I have to say ..you have your work cut-out for you.

Cheers

Hi.

All of the steps I took to set up the AD and roaming profiles were off of some Microsoft article or from a tech site that talked about how to set up AD. Im wondering if somthing got configured wrong because when I previously set it up it would freeze in the middle of the installation and I would have to unload AD and reinstall it. Maybe my server 2003 installation is messed up too?

There was that command I mentioned earlier in a previous post that would reset the Group Policy Objects to their installation defaults and maybe that would restore some missing objects.

The current set up I have right now is in my home and I am just experimenting and learning how to set up server 2003. No one but me is using the AD so if I had to reconfigure some things it would be alright.

Thanks

Hi. I am now faced with another obstacle.

My 4-5 year old western digital IDE hard drive in my server which only contains the operating system seems to be getting unreliable since the motherboard is having a hard time detecting the hard drive if it does at all. When ever I restart it wont detect the hard drive and I will get the message NTDRL not found. After unpluggin and pluggin in the ide and molex connectors it will finally detect the hard drive and then it will spend 10 minutes on the black screen where it says windows server 2003 and has the scrolling grey bar. Im wondering if the hard drive is slowing down or even failing. However, I ran a chkdsk and it registered no bad sectors but ive read up on hard drives and sometimes it wont register bad sectors untill all of the reserved sectors are used up. I have a seperate hard drive that hold all of the documents and that is only a couple years old.

I have seemed to have bad luck with hard drives that were at least 5-6 + years old since they seem to fail a lot. I was eventually going to replace the boot drive with a SATA drive so boot time would be faster.

Let me know what you think.

thanks
