soundcard not recognize by Windows 2000

I upgraded motherboards and processors a while back, and was running Win98. I upgraded to Win2K and it now will not recognize my sound card, which is built into the motherboard. It is a Biostar motherboard, 1.9 Ghz with onboard sound, videa, LAN, etc.

I have the driver, and it seems to recognize the sound card, but it's saying the device won't start.

This is the error while trying to open an audio file:

Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available (Error=40258).

This is what I get when I troublesoot the device in Add/Remove Hardware:

The device can not start. (Code 10)

Below is the link to the kit. It's a Biostar combo, with built-in sound and I have no idea what brand of sound card, other than possibly Biostar. C-MediaCMI9739A 6-Channel AC'97 CODEC

http://www.biostar.com.tw/products/...vigp/index.php3

It's an AMD Athlon XP 1.9 Ghz, with 768 MB RAM. The video, sound, and LAN are all onboard the motherboard.

Any Ideas on how to get 2000 to recognize the sound card,,,,, many thanks

Completey remove the Sound Card from the Hardware list menu. Then restart your computer.

A CD should have come with your computer with those drivers on? Put that CD in before it gets into windows , Then after you log on, it will pick up "new hardware" and just tell it you want to install drivers from your own source.

Browse the CD for the "Audio" section (They are all usually set out simply). And make sure you install an NT driver or 2K driver. If you try to install 98 drivers it will not work...

If you need any more help, just post another mesage.

you upgraded to win2k, but was that the original win2k or one with any of the service packs? if yours is not win2k SP3, then download and install it, it should fix your problem. the mediacmi or ac97 codec should be taken care of by win2k or winXP. i am going to take a look at the link you give and research your problem for you, but first, please let me know if yours is win2k SP3 or not? if not, please install first. sp3 provides many fixes and enhancements.

The original didn't have the service packs, but I did update from Microsoft, and it shows Service Pack 3, build 2195.

Gonna try to d/l the newest updates from Microsoft and see if it'll help.

Not sure what's going on. When I had Win98 dual booted with Win2k it worked fine, but when I replaced the hard drives with just one, and loaded Win2k, I can't get it to work.. lol

Downloaded all the available updates and still no go. I'm thinking maybe there's a conflict with the OS and the motherboard's built in sound card. I can't figure it out.
