Solution.
I had the same problem.
Before you install Windows 2000, make a backup copy of NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM found in the root directory of the system partition that boots Windows XP (most likely C:). When you install Windows 2000, it will overwrite these files with its own versions, making Windows XP un-bootable. To be honest, once I found the solution, I never troubleshot down to the specific file. It may be that you only need to replace NTDETECT.COM, but replacing two small files is easy enough for me to not have bothered. Anyway, once everything is installed, replace both files with the backups you made. At that point, you will be able to multiboot between XP and 2k.

Why would you want to? Think of XP as the ultimate Win2000 upgrade!

yes, you can do a dual boot winxp and win2k, but there is a rule that you should always install the latest windows version last. that is: install win2k first, then install winxp. both win2k and winxp have the option for you to choose your partition and format it during the installation, just run the installation and follow it as you did to winxp the first time.
it is possible to do winxp-win2k dual boot.
for the comment of Disk_Contented: winxp is NOT the ultimate upgrade of win2k. it may have more useful and nice features than win2k, but whatever it is, win2k is still more stable.
well, for atp69, if you still wish to dual boot winxp-win2k, i will show you in details, but for now i hope the above info help you.
have a great day!

there is also info on multi-boot of several OS's, including dual boot of winxp and win2k on microsoft.com, just go to the knowledge base and search for multi boot or dual boot, you'll get the info.

yes i would agree that windows 200 is more stable overall, but since windows xp got a service pack 1 it seems to have gotten overall better in speed/stability compared to what xp was liek before it got SP1... and tha way i look at it, i like tha new interface and it is tha newest version of windows plus it is more compatible with programs etc... and will soon be a standard for Windows OS'es

I tried, I conquered, I HATED!
XP is just 2K with a Fisher Price style Face lift. And has just been made more unstable.
Lets be honest, How many of you bought XP ??? hmmmmm
Im sticking with 2K Pro. Until i get my hands on Lindows.
2K Pro is most defaintly the way to go.

I have found XP to be rock solid (despite the security problems).
Have you seen the patches in the latest Win2000 service Pack. Talk about unstable!
Don't get me wrong, i used and liked Win2000 but it is to be superseeded.
XP is now the "De Facto" standard. Like it or not, "Microsoft wants YOU!!! for XP" (as the saying goes)

I have to agree with Disk...XP has been more than good to me! I used 2000 Pro for a year, Now Use XP Pro for about 6 months and have to say XP is hands down a way better O/S!!! I dont know what kind of machines you 2000 fans use but I havent had a problem with mine since XP's SP1 came out last fall.
