IE6 install problem

I'm running W2K sp4 and can't get IE6 to install over IE5 - it says 'a previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation before running IE setup. Setup will now close. OK'. Reboot makes no difference to this state. I had thought this was to do with the no audio problem (AC'97 driver) which Bookworm has now helped fix, but the IE6 installation is still a problem.

Belarc System Summary follows (in part):

Hi, due to securety holes IE 7 was released. There is no way that I would recommend using IE6. Instead find another browser like Mozilla Fire Fox ect.

Thanks Monty, only I already use Firefox as a matter of course. The only reason I've been trying to update to IE6 is that Microsoft Update tells me I must use IE to download and install their updates and security patches, and that IE needs updating before it can do this. Hence the problem - with not being able to install IE6, I can't get the other critical security updates, so my pc is vulnerable.
