Lost Control Panel

I'm trying to help a friend, but got stumped myself. Going to Start / Settings / Control Panel -- The Control Panel does not open in its own window with all the normal icons in view. Rather, Control Panel opens exactly like "Programs" by simply showing another expanded list. Nothing I've tried seems to be able to change it back to its regular window. System is ME. Any help greatly appreciated.

check for the virus,, that sympton was seen in Windows 2000 as well after getting infected and cleaned by MSblaster. I do hope your friend has sytem restore enabled.

Sorry it took so long to get back. Thanks for your reply. Just tonight I was able to get back to my friend's computer (out of town) and I think you are right -- the control panel window is gone due to 7 viruse's on the computer -- that's right 7! No, there was no melt down but it's a wonder.
