Vista Starter Edition- which maps to Windows XP Starter Edition, is for consumers in emerging markets with very low-end PCs. This version is a subset of the Vista Home Basic Edition and will ship in a 32-bit version only. Only three concurrent applications can run, and no inbound connections are supported. Fast user switching and account passwords aren't included.

Vista Home Basic Edition- is designed for single-computer home environments. It includes features such as firewall, Security Center, antivirus, antispyware (Windows Defender), antispam, and phishing protection. The new Aero UI will be included as well as updated Movie Maker, Media Player, and Windows Mail (Outlook Express replacement). This version also has a photo-library manager and peer-to-peer (P2P) ad hoc meeting capabilities, and more.

Vista Home Premium Edition-builds on Home Basic and adds Media Center and Media Center Extender functionality, DVD video authoring and ripping (with Digital Rights Management--DRM--protection) and High Definition (HD) support. It also features increased networking capabilities, including WiFi configuration, Internet File Sharing, and synchronization among PCs.

Vista Professional Edition-includes the ability to join domains, Remote Desktop, Encrypting File System (EFS), and Microsoft IIS (similar to XP Pro). It will also include Tablet PC capabilities.

Vista Small Business Edition- is designed for small companies that don't have full IT teams. This version is built on Vista Pro and includes additional client-side functions such as Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) support, PC fax and scanning, and subscriptions to the Windows and Office Live services. It also includes a network-backup solution.

Vista Enterprise Edition- is available only to Software Assurance
(SA) customers and not for retail purchase. It builds on Vista Pro and adds additional security features, such as full-volume encryption (BitLocker Drive Encryption), and secure startup. Microsoft Virtual PC and Multilingual User Interface are also included. It's designed for high-end business users.

Vista Ultimate Edition- is a combination of Vista Pro and Vista Home Premium with additional game-optimized technologies. It will likely have additional access to online service.

Is there any reason end user should not like all the choices ?

I've not had a hands on look at it yet.

So now we are at seven versions, there is a melting pot of confusion just around the corner just waiting to happen, as it is MS is getting a fair bit of flack, be interesting where that all leads.

The reviews I have read have not been all that hyped up over Vista, all though some of the features read like they could be good.

I believe like most, that untill I have a copy installed and play around with it for a bit that I will reserve judgment.

Too me, it just seems like a pain in the arse to support all those different versions, XP home/pro was perfectly ok. However these seem like very different feature sets which they are promoting and for many, as above this is just going to cause immense confusion for the public and developers alike.

Blimey, Vista is getting as confusing as Linux.....never a week passes ...without a new flavour.

Frankly I suspect this is to try and cover themselves in profit - if you want to up-grade you will find it expensive, so the hope will be that you pay the extra up-front. However, what Microsoft fails to understand is that most folk don't care about these features - they want a stable bug-free system that works. All anti-virus is unnecessary if the platform is correctly designed. Security flaws occur mainly because Windows wasn't designed with the web in mind (indeed BGates thought it wouldn't catch on!)...hence massive security holes which have lasted to the present.
I fear Viata will be found wanting:- either it will be hugely expensive...or...it will require extra computing power (at a time when processors are being de-rated to save energy!)....and more memory creating World-wide shortages and price hikes.
Bill Gates was never one to save memory use if an old routine could be used. Windows Vista will be the latest incarnation of "Bloat-ware" and it a shame so much time and effort is being put into what is likely to be "more of the same"...will Dos ever be removed, I wonder?

If the same development-effort went into Linux we'd have very stable, bug-free and internat-savvy software at a fraction of the price and with millions of users. Of course it wouldn't make money for Microsoft, so they will try to avoid it. Magazines like Windows as each new fix... creates more readers.
I am still a Windows user, but don't update.

Linux IS Crap Ive been with M$ since 3.1 its not always been stable but its far better than linux has ever been if linux is so good then when you got to pc world every computer has windows xp pre installed not suse linux or linspire

People say linux is more sucure and all that crap if dont dont download dogy software or cracks windows is just as safe

Ive installed Gentoo,Suse,Ubuntu,Linspire,Alinux,Mandriva,slax i thoght the only decent one was Linspire! Why Becuse it was the most like windows

Linux doesnt support my ADSL modem, it rejects dialup modems and my graphics card is fuzzy under linux

Personally speaking, I think the majority of M$ users will stick to XP Home/Pro, bearing in mind that MS intend to stop support for XP SP1.

I really don't see the big deal in Vista, personally. There again, maybe I'm wrong. It all boils down to personal opinion and taste.

Suffice to say, I'll be sticking with XP as my main box, and W2K on my test box.

Hi ... Another thing to keep in mind is ? Which bit to buy ( 32/64 ) ? If you get 64bit ? Most manufacturers don't have drivers for it , If you go with 32 bit ? How long before the manufacturers do support 64 bit ? I believe its just another way for all of them to start the spending cycle

Because Linux is not as easy to use as windows, hence most companys will pre-install windows simply because its user friendly, Linux is much more versatile, as you can do more with it, windows however does things for you and when you wish to change advanced setting etc manually XP can really **** you off...

Um.. no, its a tested theory that windows standard security sucks, Linux's does not...

I wonder how this will effect the MCP qualifications, now there are much more interfaces that need to be understood, I feel that they have over-comlicated things, as I bet certain parts of the system will be in different areas on each version
