error loading operating system

Hi

I just installed vista onto my computer probably a few days ago and it was working fine. Before that I was trying to partition my hard drive so I can keep my windows xp files and use vista at the same time. well it erased the windows xp and didnt create the other partition so I was left to either installing a new xp or vista....I chose vista for some odd reason.....

but to my problem....

well yesterday I decided to stop being lazy and install xp in a different partition. so I booted the windows xp cd and created a new partition using it, it restarts but it doesnt continue the installation....so I tried to install it again but after it reboots it wouldnt continue. So then I tried to boot to vista and I get "error loading operating system"

I tried using ptedit to see if it was hidden but vista was active. So I decided that maybe deleting the partition would work so I deleted it and I still keep getting the same message.

any remedies?

thanks

btw I want it back because I have tons of important files on it.(so stupid shouldve just installed xp in the first place....)
thanks again!!!

Hey buddy,

You can use I alittle guide I wrote for references. Click HERE to take a look at it.

Also you must keep in mind that if you install Vista before installing XP you will mess up the Vista boot and you won't be able to boot into Vista.

With this said you need to install XP first and the go for the Vista installation after.

Take a look at the guide and see the different options you have to install it. Hope that helps you

I dont really want to install a new vista I just want to get the one I have back. I'm pretty sure what happened was I overrited the vista bootloader with the xp boatloader while trying to install xp.

the problem is I dont know how to fix the bootloader. I tried going to the vista setup and going to boot recovery but that doesnt work. But As soon as I install xp again im gonna try out your guide.

Put your vista dvd into the drive and restart the machine. I am getting the same error and for now it is a temp fix.

I will post back when i find the perm fix.

btw. if you want a clean install and only have an upgrade dvd for vista just boot from the dvd and install. Do not provide activation information during install. this will put the os into trial mode. once installation is finished just toss in the dvd again and run the upgrade install. this time activating it.

sucks to have to install twice but at least you get a clean install with out windows having to create old.windows directorys and share old files.
