While I have no idea if you consider the option of a partition of your harddrive and install xp on a diffrent partition? Is that an option. Because if you forsure DON"T want vista ever, then I suggest a complete reformat of your harddrive and a fresh install of xp. If you want to keep vista "just in case" then partition your harddrive and install xp on its own partion. Let us know.
To run xp on its own partition and installing it after vista can forsure be done. May be a bit tricky, but it can be done. I did it. So consider if you run xp on its own partion and keep vista, dual boot as it were. It may be a bit frustrating, and take a bit of time to get it right. It can be done, and you will learn something in the process. Choice is yours. Will help which ever way you decide to go.
When you make your choice there are some thing you forsure need to download (drivers) and a few other things as well. Do not jump into this super fast. Just decide what route you wanna go, then we will take it from there. The next step will getting all the drivers and such ready to go so when its done your computer is ready to rock and roll with no problems.
