vista makes me laugh

So I was over at my sisters house the other day and she bought a new laptop I guess and it happened to have vista. I was messing around on it for a while not really liking the interface too much, very few things I liked when I decided to do a windows update, already found 8 updates. I downloaded them then rebooted, which took forever maybe 15 minutes, then blue screen of death already . Are you serious, already? That by itself made me weary about getting Vista in itself even though I would love it for 64-bit support and Direct X 10.

Windows updates have caused problems on some systems, regardless of which version of Windows, for quite a while. There are so many variables among systems it would be surprising if a Windows update didn't cause some headaches on some systems.

Remember all the crashes when XP's SP1 came out? Those who didn't bother to follow Microsoft's advice on how to prepare Windows before installing a major overhaul like SP1 (and later, SP2) experienced major problems.

Just take a look at any computer help forum and you'll see plenty of posts in the XP forum (not so many in the Win9x forums since MS no longer pushes updates to those versions) about "I installed an update and now it won't boot (or only boots in Safe Mode or won't fill in the blank)."

I haven't had any problems with the updates I've installed on Vista.

Oh I totally agree, that's why my entire span of using Microsoft OS's I have always waited until they atleast reach a SP1 of the product before I purchase it, they are too unreliable at first for me. Although I don't think XP to Vista will be that big of a change compared to 98SE to XP was.

just reading all this, I'm laughing. I have to agree with everything said here. Microsoft will continue to utilize our error reporting to fix the source code because again, they were in too much of a hurry to fix all their issues. No better trouble shooting method than trial by fire and putting the software into an actual live environment. You know, I was just thinking the other day.. didn't Microsoft JUST get XP fixed for the most part with SP2? It took how any years again? I'll wait till Vista is reduced to the $1.99 extra value shelf.

There are billions of lines of code in Windows. Well, okay, probably not billions in Win3.x. The amazing part that there aren't more...and worse...bugs from typos alone.

So do computer games also make you laugh? I can't remember the last time I bought a computer game that didn't have patches to download immediately after their release. I've seen some that had patches available before I saw the game in the stores around here (yes, it's a rural area and last on everybody's delivery route).

What about all the "critical updates" from various other software developers? I've seen plenty of posts on various forums about an update from Symantec or McAfee (those being the most widely used) causing major chaos, only to find that those companies release a fix to fix their update.

McAfee, for example, had a "small problem" with their AV software writing a log endlessly to the point where the log was eating up gigabytes of space. After hearing from enough users, they released a fix after several weeks of denial.

Nothing wrong with being amused at software developers just so long as you are an equal opportunity ridiculer.

actually the slow down after updates is defender based. It has a long and drawn out routine for security measures for installs, downloads, and any non IE web browser. Another way to try to control the market. Some pc games appear to not load or hang but just take extra time to start...can adjust in the new games window, can tweak it and even bypass defender.

defender will prove to be a pain for experienced and savvy net users but is a safe bet for those not so educated in the world of online...
