No sound in Vista - Mobo change

I'm also having issues with no sound, but when I upgraded from XP to Vista on my FIC (Realtek Ac'97) mobo.. everything was fine.. then the mobo heated up and the resisters crashed.. found a MSI board cheap with AGP for my upgraded video driver and now there is no sound.. Called Microsoft.. no luck.. uninstall drivers and install the Realtek 6231.zip file, which acknowledges that the device is working and shows on the "meter" when I run Windows Media Player, but no sound.. MSI has me install a later version of the Realtek driver (tried anyway, but no luck).. So now I'm back to the latest Realtek driver, went thru the AMIBIOS and set the AC'97 to "Auto", but there is a conflict somewhere.. very frustrating..

Thanks..

That board can have Realtek or C-Media audio, it depends on the chipset, can you get Everest copy and paste the My Computer/Summary section, it will give the chipset http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-16369.html

Hope this helps

What OS are you using Vista, can you Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.

It appears you have a sound card installed, if your audio plugs are in an expansion slot as shown here http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

the only drivers I could find were at driverguide but a Vista driver is not included

This is a bit of a wild card solution

A new sound card or you could remove the sound card and use onboard, Dell don't offer the driver for you model, but do have it listed for another model, it's ADI198x and it's here http://support.euro.dell.com/support... W1&hidlang=en

but first I would go to Intel and update your Chipset driver No:2
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filt...9&submit=Go%21

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions
