Much progress has been made. Vista did install a Realtek AC'97 Audio Driver. That eliminated the Red X and the error message. It also wanted me to install the Creative Audigy Audio Processor (WDM) driver, which I couldn't find. One thing that I did download was the Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS (WDM) driver. This (and Realtek) both appear in the Sound, video and game controllers part of the Device Manager. The Multimedia Audio Controller is now gone. After all this, the sound is coming in very faintly.
