DVD/CD Driver problems
I have a relatively new (6 weeks) HP Pavilion a 1710n. Although I would have preferred to stay with XP a while longer, it came preloaded with Windows Vista, so I'm adapting. The computer has a "Lightscribe DVD SuperMulti Drive / CD-Writer". It worked fine until late last week. Now it will not run either music or data discs. Since there is no floppy disk drive installed on the computer, I really need this drive.
The only new variable introduced last week was the installation of software and drivers that came with a new Panasonic Lumix Digital Camera. The software included "ArcSoft Software Suite", "Lumix Simple Viewer 1.1E", and "PHOTOfunSTUDIO-viewer-1.1E". A USB Driver might also have been installed, but I am not sure, and I don't know how to check or differentiate between a new driver, and the ones that came preinstalled on the machine.
Now, as I said, the DVD/CD drive will not run anything. When a disc is inserted, it will spin up, the green light on the front will flash 2 or 3 times, then nothing.
I checked in the Device Manager, and under DVD/CD ROM Drives, the only item is "TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H652M ATA Device" preceeded by the appropriate icon. There is what appears to be a yellow triangle with a black exclamation point in it superimposed over the icon.
I first tried uninstalling the driver and restarting the computer to get the driver to reinstall (On a different subject, is there a "Search for New Hardware button anywhere in Windows Vista?). Shortly after the start-up, I got a message that the computer was unable to install the driver. Thinking that it might be the camera software, I uninstalled the new software, then uninstalled the DVD/CD driver again. After restarting the computer again, I got the same message as before. I have checked, and there is no updated driver for the DVD/CD drive.
Any information or guidance would greatly appreciated.
Rob

Hi Rob, go to >start computer>right click the cd rom >hardware>click on the cd rom and go to properties>drivers. whats in there?
As for the Panasonic drivers it shouldn't cause a problem but then again.....with Vista every thing you need for basic photo's comes with it.
No driver is necessary for your cd rom drive.
Have you tried a system restore point?

The plot thickens... The CD/DVD drive doesn't even show up as a drive when I click on Computer in the Start menu. I get the "C" drive, a "D" drive which is (I think) system information stored on the hard drive, and removable drives "F" through "I", all of which are USB, flash card, etc. slots on the front of the computer. I am pretty sure that the CD/DVD drive was labeled as "E".
As to the system restore, I never created a restore point (stupid, I know). If I do a system restore point now, will it just restore it to the original configuration? Will I lose any data I have stored on the computer? What about music files downloaded via Itunes or connect.com. I can reinstall the programs no problem, but I have probably spent over $100.00 on music, and I don't want to have to pay for it again.
Thanks for your help.

Don't do that
Rnorman
Go back into Device Manager -
Right click on your DVDROM drive.
Click on Properties.
Just above where it says "OK and Cancel" it should give an error.
It will give a sentance, and then followed by "error code xx"
xx = Error number.
Once you have the error number, reply and maybe I, or somebody else can help on this matter.

Same problem
I have experienced the same problem. Funnily enough I was also installing Arcsoft which came as part of my printer Epson CX4200 package.
The error code which appears is an error code 39.

Last time this happened my son reloaded the computer from scratch which means half my pre-loaded software went missing. Why did she do it again then, well I hadn't realised until yesterday what had cause the problem.

Code 39 is a driver is not present . Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

ok i had the same problem and i had to go thro a couple steps in order to fix it. I'm running Vista on a pavilion desktop and have the TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H652M ATA Device. I got error code 39.
so here ya go:
click the start menu
find the search box (located at directly above the start menu button)
type in "regedit" and press enter
you might get a warning asking if you want to open the "Registry Edit"
click yes
now you should have the registry edit program open
double click on "computer"
double click on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
double click on "SYSTEM"
double click on "CurrentControlSet"
double click on "Control"
double click on "Class"
double click on "{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
now you should see a list of items on the right side of the window
and there is an item named "lowerfilter"
anyway... right click on it and click delete.
once deleted, close the registry edit prgram and restart your pc.
hope it works
hope this helps

Asfan,
You mentioned to delete only the lower filters, sometimes this will work, but you may also need to delete the upper filters aswell.
