pip -- lemme say this about that. Of corse vistas gonna be slow...if you don't know what you're buying...take a stroll through stapes....virtually 100% of those pc's sold no matter WHAT the price...will be 2.5-3.5 ~average. As you (should) know, assuming you did some PRODUCT research, it is a very poor decision to upgrade from xp to vista. When you buy a new machine, get vista. And yes, about...to answer your question most people, including tech support workers (which typically I don't think they know that much...they're about as good as a highschool Computer teacher) don't know what they're doing. and pip...let me remind you...what have they done? well, for a RESPONSIBLE computer-user, they have made PCs ~30-50 times safer...I hate to break it to ya, but if you're a download what you see, myspace...limewire person, its you're own fault your PC stinks....sorry...but it ain't gettin better.

To monty: What's your WEI (or WIE...cannot EVER remember...I wonder if I'm dislexic...lol anyways...whats ur...windowsy indexy thing?

Oh...I kinda forgot something for pip (bad night....project....not much sleep....yea.... do you own a machine with vista? if so, what is your WEI/WIE if not...why the heck are ya in here? I want personal experiences...not what you think about what other people have to say....

ALSO...my wie/wei is a mere 4.8 and its amazing....and I'm saying this from a house that has....6 computers in it (sorry, had to stop and think for a sec) All of which run better than any public computer I've ever used (not that thats saying much...but there is a signifigant difference)

man you have 4.8 rating. your computer must be a powerhouse. i have a pretty powerful machine and it only rates it 4. i was shocked on seeing the rating as i expected it to be around 6 or 7.

Take no notice of this rating thing. It is totally flawed from the outset.

Vista runs quite nicely on a virtual machine with an index of 1. Says it all really.

Remember when "Longhorn" was the buzz. The new OS was going to be amazing. I remember reading in many top notch magazines about the new file system in Longhorn and I got quite excited. Then, slowly, one by one, as the OS's release date crept closer, each of the cool new features were plucked from the OS. In the end Vista was, and is, nothing more than a glorified version of Windows XP.

I think that the reason that there is a new OS almost ready is because the new OS is actually what Vista was supposed to be.

I have however ended up switching full time to Vista now. I have XP installed as well but find no purpose to go into it anymore. It took me a while to tweak and customise Vista to get rid of all of those VERY annoying security measures. Now that Vista is less frustrating to use I have actually become more comfortable and efficient using it versus XP. I have also really come to like the visual Aero theme. Enough so that XP looks silly now. lol. Vista may not be amazing but I think it is better than XP in many ways. Too bad it's such a pain to use in it's default state.

Vista is, to coin a phrase, mutton dressed as lamb.
It's a pain in any state. It lacks a fallback mode for upgraders so they can get immediate grips on it. Different look, same old rubbish dos undernead, but larger of course.
It is in no way superior to XP, and in most ways inferior.
Aero may look nice, but it costs too much from your machine and it's just there to make Vista look good.
XP will give a similar appearance, and will even run the Vista sidebar.

Yep, 10 gigs installed so I can use notepad? Now that is progress.

I've read all the posts. I'd like to add my 2 cents. My son wanted Vista on his computer. I set it up for duel boot. My opinion, it stinks. Lack of hardware compatibility.

His Audigy 2 ZS works great in XP. Sound is terrible in Vista.
His modem was not recognized in Vista. Had to buy him a new modem. $$$$ Vista recognized it in a second and installed drivers.
His printer is not recognized in Vista. Tried all the work arounds to get it to work. Will not work. Refuse to spend money just to get a Vista recognized printer. $$$$

Companies are refusing to write the proper drivers for existing software because they expect people to go out and spend money on Vista capable hardware. Look at the big stink that happened at Creative a few weeks ago when some kid took the Creative drivers for X-fi and the Audigy cards and made them Vista Capable. (for free) It it possible. But companies want more money. Buy, buy, buy.

The problem with the sound card drivers is Microsofts. They don't want the current driver types that support advanced features causing problems and giving Vista a bad name. So your spanking new soundcard runs like a soundblaster 16.

Hardware compatability was a problem with XP to a certain extent, though it did have native support for a comprehensive assortment of stuff, and at least in some cases you could fallback to 2K drivers with a bit of tweaking.

Vista is sacrificing much in the name of stability and security, even though it hasn't helped if you look around the net.

My thougts...

Hi, new here and first post - what a place for it

When XP first came out, oh the outrage! Exactly the same problems as now with Vista, more or less. No drivers available for scanners (for example) that worked in 98 - which were never supported for XP in the end. You needed to buy a new scanner if you wanted the problem solved. XP was horrid until SP1, and then SP2 changed everything. Oh, SP3 just came out this week too (until MS released they made an error and have now pulled it until it's fixed)... there is always *something* wrong somewhere

...and so we see how what goes around comes around. XP obviously is the best thing since sliced bread to some, and so Vista will go exactly the same way.

My advice is ask yourself why you are going to Vista. If there is no real good reason, then stick with XP. Vista can be better, but maybe not yet for a lot of people.

EDIT:

Oh, you might want to wait 'til 2009 when the next version of Windows will be out. Traditionally it's always the every second version of Windows that is actually good!

ok i been using windows vista ultimate now for 6 months on a dual boot. sp1 has cleared up a few bugs like the file copying over network plus other related issues. also tweaking the registries and disabling some apps like superfetch, areo ,windows defender and disk defrager, also some services. it now dont keep thrashing the hard drive all the time. it should all be good when sp2 comes out. like others have said win xp was a nightmare until sp1 and sp2 were out . as for speed ,xp runs faster i would say and games are more stable.

XP used to be crap when it came out too, it was no different to vista. Vista just needs time to develop a bit more.
