wont let me install xp from vista please help !!

I recently bought a pc put vista on it only to find some software wont work so i bought a copy of xp only to find it wants a full version (first time installshion) which I don’t have (i have the upgrade) when i tried to install xp on bios it says it cant read it when i run it on vista it says vista is newer so it wont install i tried running 98 on a separate hard drive to then install xp it says there is a file missing please help I don’t want to waist any more money!

OK, first, boot from your XP cd, delete the partition on your hard drive then recreate it.

To clean install XP from an upgrade disk run the setup, when it tells you that it can not find a previous Windows installation for verification pop your 98 disk in (any disk other later than 95 will work, not sure about Vista as the os may need to be older than XP) The installer will see your 98 disk, verify you can install XP and continue on its merry way, you will be prompted to remove your 98 disk and reinsert your XP one.
