Speakers not being recognized

Hi,

I recently bought a Toshiba Tecra A9. Here are the specs:

Intel Core 2 duo t7100 1.8 ghz
2 gig ram
5400rpm sata
3xusb2.0

etc.

Anyways, Whenever I plug in speakers or headphones into the input, nothing happens... The sound keeps playing from the computer and the nothing from the headphones.

When I open ''sound'', the headphones show up (get recognized) when I plug them in, but other than that nothing.

What's the deal?

If you plug headphones to the input, they will in fact become a stereo microphone. They will produce nothing.

They will overide the internal speakers if you plug them into the line out socket. Being able to hear sound then will depend on the output level of the line out socket.

They don't show as a device, but the audio control panel may have a setting that controls what happens when a plug is inserted.
