I just purchased a WD My Book 500 gig external HD, and it keeps "losing" itself in Vista. It asks to be reformatted every time I plug it in. This of course wipes the drive clean, and defeats its purpose of data storage.
I downloaded and ran the diagnostic tool, (about all the "support" available from WD) and it at first said the connecting cable wasn't connected, so I replaced it, and got the same error. a friend suggested I take it to a XP machine and reformat the HD using "quick reformat" which I did. It seemed to do the trick, I uploaded my back ups and it seemed to work fine, untill I disconnected the cable and later plugged it back in.
Boom, "You need to format this drive before you can use it".
I notice a LOT of people around the net are posting this same issue, but no solutions have been published that I can find. Any ideas?
The Machine is an ACER ase380-ud421a, 4 gigs SDRAM, windows Vista Premium, 340 Gig HD.
