Sound from only half of the speakers

i recently purchased a laptop with windows vista home premium preinstalled. but when i connected my 5.1 speakers to it the sound came from only half of the speakers i.e. 2 speakers but others remain silent. My speaker worked perfectly with with my desktop with sp sp2 installed. Is this some problem in vista or just some driver problem.

MB: Mobile intel 945 series
Ram: 2048mb
OS: Windows vista home premium
processor: 1.8ghz core2duo

This has nothing to do with your speakers or Windows Vista....It's just the way speakers setting are in your laptop.

Go to control panel / Sound and Audio Device / Advance and set the Speaker setting to Surround sound 5.1, that's it.

Cheers

More than likely that will be Vista's fault.

I'm having the same problem with my Dell Dimension E510 Media Center desktop. I'm running XP. I've got 5.1 surround speakers and am only getting sound from the 2 front speakers. I've checked settings and it shows everything "should" be working. Any ideas??

To hear 5.1 sound requires a 5.1 source.
Connect the digital out of your optical drive to the SPDIF in of your sound card.
play a dvd... You will hear it. Assuming your card settings are correct.

Will also work in suitably equipped games if you select surround, or "more than two speakers", etc.
