Question No sound 82801DB but device installed

Hi all,

I installed Vista on one of my machines (to take advantage of the Media Centre - I don't have XP MCE otherwise that would do).

Unfortunately, no sound is available.
The device is installed, and apparently working. In fact, the MICROPHONE works fine, just the sound ouput doesn't output. Whenever sound is being played, the mixer shows the audio levels going up and down, but nothing comes out at all.

I'm aware that Vista has issues depending on how old the hardware is etc, and that this particular device deosn't have real Vista drivers but I wondered if (a) anyone had a similar experience and (b) if anyone has found a work-around as yet.

It seems very strange to me that the drivers will enable the microphone correctly, but not the audio output!

Analog Devices AD1981A @ Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller

Installing Vista clean installs the above driver. Have updated to the latest from Windows Update. Have also tried to install the RealTek AC'97 and the SoundMAX drivers with the same results - the device says it is working properly, but no sound is output from the port.

Anyway, I know I might just have to buy a PCI card to solve the issue, which isn't the end of the world at all... I just want to ensure I exhaust all avenues first.

Cheers!

I can't comment on whether you have the right driver, as no details of comp or motherboard given, but look at this on how to make Vista use an XP driver, it's in this thread, refers to a Dell model so cab path shown, but it's the update method and how to set Vista to use it

Analog Devices AD1981A @ Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller is the full name of the controller (which is onboard) as per Everest (one of your favourites, right? ). The actual mobo is Intel D845GRG (haven't checked Everest details), but the chipset for audio is as above.

I did forget to mention in my post that I did attempt to load the XP driver downloaded from Intel's audio support for this board since there was no Vista driver available, and it installed fine, but the same problem happens.

I have even changed the mobo for an exact replica but the same problems occur. Naturally, sound works in XP for both boards anyway.

Remember, this problem is not the same as others where the device is not installed/started correctly; the audio driver is installed/started/working as far as device manager will say, and of course is interacting with the microphone correctly. Hmmn, just had a thought that the chipset drivers for the Intel board might be causing an issue... considering the mixer shows sound being played through the device, but nothing on the output... perhaps it's being lost through the southbridge...

I might try the XP drivers for the chipset if I can find them.

Have you heard of this problem before (where the driver is actually working as expected and no "unknown devices" or unstarted devices in device manager?

yes, it is usually the Windows audio serve, this is how to correct XP but not sure on Vista

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot.
