Question Ghost Icons from Drag-And-Drop

I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, on a Toshiba Satellite A205 2GB Ram, Intel Centrino Duo 1.66 GHz

Question:

A good majority of the time when I drag-and-drop icons into programs (ex. a pic into a PowerPoint presentation, or a MP3 into ITunes) it leaves a 'ghost' of the icon over the application and then that 'ghost' stays there until I restart my PC. (My 'remedy' for it is to end the explorer.exe task and run it again in the Task Manager) Is there any way to make this stop happening?

P.S. - I do NOT have any Windows Updates installed... it died mid-school year from an erroneous WinUpdate... it's summer and I just haven't gotten around to it... But back when I was up-to-date it still did the ghost icons, so maybe I should do the windows updates (1.) because of this issue and 2.) the various other updates anyway
