SD card AND external HD problem ...

i dotn know when this happened... but

i turned on my computer last night and i popped in my 1 gig SD card into the slot and ... nothing happened ...

i went to go check My Computer to open it and i found nothing there ....

so i went to the security center and i found 3 updates which i installed .. blah blah ... rebooted my computer ... but still nothing .... i went to microsoft's site and i found the plug in to fix the problem .... but still nothing has happened ...

and this morning i tried plugging in my external HD to listen to some music in there ... and nothing is recognized ....

there is a little red light on the external hard drive saying its plugged in ... and there is also a blue light to show when it is being used ....

when i plug it in, the red light only comes up

i am using a Toshiba Satellite A134 with vista ...



i am going to do a restore ... but i doubt that it will do anything ...

i have researched this problem ... apparently, TONS of laptops with built in SD readers have the same problem ...
i dont really care about the SD reader ... i just really want to be able to use my External HD (its a 250 GB made by SimpleTech)

i plugged it in wrong ...
hehe .... newbie mistake ...

BUT there is another thing that has happened before ... that i cant remember how to fixx .... when i click "My Computer" the way that the drives were sorted is cometely different now and i cant remember howto fix it ...

i searched it up before and found that i have to go into the registry and change 1 number ... i just dont remember where it was ....

plz help =[
