Won't play anything I download

My laptop won't properly download anything from the internet so that when I try to play anything mp4. It's like something prevents it from working right. I can add files but eventually they won't play.

I go online to play videos from the internet and they will only play for five minutes before freezing and shutting down. I can play them fine on other people's laptop.

What is causing this?

Go to Divx and download the free player but only choose the codec to install not the other files. http://www.divx.com/
Also have installed the latest Adobe flash player? http://www.adobe.com/
And AC3filter 1.51 http://ac3filter.net/project/1/releases

Thanks for the input but I now believe the problem to be bigger than merely not playing video's and losing connection....I am pretty sure I have a virus on my computer but I have been unable to locate and isolate it.

I have run all my anti-virus programs and registry programs trying to find it but it still eludes me. The newest problem is my internet connection constantly being hijacked and the really annoying problem which completely baffles me....

I will close an internet page and for no reason the internet page will start opening new pages until it overloads my computer and I have to do an emergency shut down.

I have tried safe mode and ran all my programs...how to I find the virus before it completely invades my computer??
