device manager is blank

I was attempting to fix another problem i was having with my computer, the sound wasn't working and next to the volume icon it said that there wasn't a driver installed so i went to my device manager and it was completely blank. I tried showing all the hidden devices and still no luck. I'm not really sure what the problem could be, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
