Computer "times out" too soon

I'm running VISTA on a Dell computer. I fear last night when I was tired, I clicked on something which has shortened the length of time before my PC times out. Now when I'm trying to download something, my connection is stopped after only a few minutes. How do I get back to where I can lengthen it to a longer time? Thanks
